Risky Behavior in the Workplace

Understanding and identifying risk-taking behavior is a key element to improving safety in your workplace.

• Does your organization unknowingly reinforce or reward employees who routinely practice risky behavior?
• Are risk-takers known throughout your organization as the
  "can-do" employees?
• Are shortcuts built in to your standard operating procedures?

Identify Unsafe Condition vs. Unsafe Action

• Example of an unsafe condition: Broken or uneven pavement on walkways
• Example of an unsafe action: Standing on scaffold railing / Removing guard to work on equipment while it is running

• Are safety procedures being by-passed to save time?
• Example: Using a chair instead of a ladder to extend your reach

• Example: Wearing PPE only when supervision is present
• Example: Locking energy sources and not testing to confirm Lock Out
